Christmas tree stands etc...

There are two basic types of purpose-built Christmas tree stands.

The first is the clamp type.

This consists of, usually four legs meeting at a cup which has (usually four) screw clamps to locate the Christmas tree trunk.

The cup which locates the Christmas tree trunk is generally of limited size and consequently is only able to hole a small quantity of water. If the water runs out (is all taken-up by your tree), the base of the tree will seal with sap and no further water will be able to be drunk by your tree. The more water your tree drinks, the longer it will last, the better it will smell and look.

Another possible problem with this type of stand is that it may not hold your tree securely enough. The tree is held in position solely by the pressure of the clamps against the trunk.

The second is the pin & hoop type. (our type)

This consists of a hoop of steel to transfer the load of the tree to the floor/ground.

A pin (nail or screw) is inserted in the base of the trunk to securely locate it, and the stand is further nailed or screwed to the side of the trunk of your Christmas tree. Securing the tree positively in two positions provides a very secure and safe location for your Christmas tree.

A bucket of water is located under the base of the trunk so that the tree may drink. Buckets of about 5 litres may be used. This gives the tree lots of water and means that you have to refill the bucket less often than with the smaller cup as used in the clamp type stand.

Generally speaking, the larger and more robust the stand, the better they are at holding the tree in the desired position.

Some people suggest that "secret formulas" will give added life to Christmas trees.
Here is one idea:

All trees must be put in water as soon as received. It is also a good idea to cut a 12mm off of the bottom to ensure good water absorption.
If a tree is watered consistently, it will last much longer.
Mix up a batch of our "Super Secret Tree Preservation Formula", and feed the tree as soon as possible.
If you are not setting it up right away, take it outside, untie it, and put it in a bucket of water, in a shady spot.

Super Secret Tree Preservation Formula

Pour 10 litres of hot water into a 20 - 25 litre container, add the following:
500ml Golden syrup or treacle
100ml liquid chlorine bleach
50ml vinegar
20ml Borax
50ml softley wool detergent

Stir all the ingredients into the hot water, cut 1/2 inch from your christmas tree butt of the trunk.
Stand your tree in container and soak tree for 4 - 5 days, keeping the "secret formula" topped up all the time. You may wish to prop up your tree outside in shady area or in your garage. Keep pets and children away from the tree while it is absorbing the "secret formula".!
People who have tried this say that they have not had any substantial needle shedding problems though iIt is still necessary to keep the tree watered.
